See Call of Duty: World at War's co-op gameplay

Activision and Treyarch told us about their co-op multiplayer plans for Call of Duty: World at War following the game's unveiling back in June. Now they've put their promises into video form although the roughly five minutes of footage is entirely focused on two-player action (the final game is pegged to support four-player teams through the entire campaign).

So far it looks to be ... pretty standard fare. Still, with the historically high intensity of COD's firefights, it will be a huge plus to have as many as three buddies backing you up in battle. Also, as nice as co-op is, we're extremely eager to see what Treyarch is working on to (hopefully) out-do COD4's stellar competitive mutliplayer modes.

Street Fighter II HD beta gets bandaged

Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix's recently extended "open beta" got a technical hadouken this morning, addressing a number of the issues faced by the redrawn brawler, from connection lapses to frozen consoles. Other changes include Ken's newly-nerfed dragon punch, while Capcom says that the overall online experience has seen around a 50% improvement.

Notes a post on the company's blog, "While we can't do anything about high ping times, we've optimized the gameplay experience so that it's less noticeable and smoother," some of which can be seen in video form here. Still, those pining for more characters to pummel will be left wanting. According to Capcom, adding additional fighters was "technically not possible for the patch." We'll just have to wait until we get our thumbs on the full game to get our Cammy on.

Carmack: Xbox 360 Rage 'a little blurry,' 'key scenes' same as PS3

mgs4
How many DVDs does it take to screw in a light bulb? ... Are we talkin' a Mega Texture light bulb that casts penumbra shadowing?

In an update to id Software's data dilemma, John Carmack tells Tom's Games, "We're pretty much resigned to the fact that we're going to make [Rage] fit onto two DVDs on the 360." In other words, Microsoft isn't about to write off the steep royalties that allegedly add up with each additional game disc. The good news is you'll only have to whine for mom to swap your Xbox 360 discs once. The bad news, as headlined last week, is that Rage for Xbox 360 will supposedly look worse than the PlayStation 3's Blu-ray version due to data compression. But how much worse?

"All of the key scenes, the things anyone is going to take a screenshot of are going to look exactly the same on both platforms," Carmack explains. "They'll get the high quality compression. But if you go into some areas in the wasteland, like behind a fence where nobody will typically go and explore, this is where the 360 version may look a little blurry compared to the PS3." We hear id's been sweeping some artifacts under the rug too. And watch out for those jaggies hiding beneath the bed!

Bionic Commando Rearmed swings in next week; launching later on Euro PSN, $5 more on PC

Capcom has officially announced its release dates and pricing for Bionic Commando Rearmed and, except for two tiny issues, everything looks pretty good for next week's launch. Turns out the PC version, available August 14, will cost $15, which is $5 more than on Xbox 360 and PS3, for no apparent reason [update: apparently, "$14.99 represents an appropriate price for the platform," Capcom says -- full statement on Shacknews]. The other thing is that the European PSN has no release date scheduled at this time.

PS3 owners in Japan, along with Xbox 360 owners worldwide, will be able to purchase BCR for $10 on August 13, US PS3 owners need to wait until the PSN updates the following day. We'll let you know when a European PSN release date is given.

Guitar Hero World Tour adds Dinosaur Jr., Survivor ... Bob Seger?

IGN was able to pin down seven new tracks for Guitar Hero World Tour and it's, well ... it's a mixed bag, to put it kindly. Let's take a look:
  • Airbourne – "Too Much Too young..."
  • At the Drive-in – "One Armed Scissor"
  • Black Rebel Motorcycle Club – "Weapon of Choice"
  • Bob Seger – "Hollywood Nights"
  • Dinosaur Jr. – "Feel the pain"
  • Silversun Pickups – "Lazy Eye"
  • Survivor – "Eye of the Tiger"
Anything jump out at you specifically? Yep, Bob Seger. Now, of the Bob Seger songs you could choose from, you could do a lot worse than "Hollywood Nights." But Seger is also responsible for "Old Time Rock 'n' Roll," which is scientifically, quantifiably the second worst song ever recorded (after Phil Collins' version of "Groovy Kind of Love.") Shouldn't that preclude Seger's involvement with anything ever? Or are we being too restrictive?

EA dates Godfather 2 for February 2009

EA has opened the briefcase on Godfather 2, revealing that the sequel you can't refuse will ship for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC in February 2009.

EA also shed a bit more detail on the previously revealed "Don's View," which promises to kiss the gameplay with a touch of strategy. Here you'll build up, expand, and defend crime rings against rival families by hand picking "Made Men," and sending them out onto the streets to do your bidding. Godfather 2 will also include the previous game's BlackHand control scheme, promising "more visceral hand-to-hand brutality" this time around. As the old saying goes, if you want something done right, do it yourself.

Let's rave over TAC's Illuminated Drumsticks

There's a part of us that wants to compare The Ant Commandos' Illuminated Drumsticks to one of those ridiculously absurd Wiimote attachments; however, there's something stopping us. It's just ... it's just ... these are drumsticks that glow when you hit them on the drum pad. Come on, that's awesome!

At $20 the price is a bit silly, but then again, so is the whole concept. We're sure that under the right chemical conditioning these things will add a whole new level of glee to drumming. There's a horrible video after the break to see how it works.

X3F Week in Review: August 1, 2008 - August 7, 2008

Not a whole lot going down in Xbox 360 land this week. Oh sure, there are rumors of price cuts, but nothing really solid to latch onto. Except Braid. In short, Braid is an absolutely brilliant game. You should go buy it. Seriously. We'll wait. It is short, sweet and wonderful. Anyway, check out the latest that Xbox 360 Fanboy has to offer below. Oh, and enjoy the fan made Viva Piñata video inspired by the Halo 3 "Believe" ad campaign.

Blow explains dilemma of Braid's price to 1Up

Braid is great. Braid's 1200 MS point ($15) price, on the other hand, has been a point of contention. Designer Jonathan Blow sat down with 1Up and discussed what went into the decision of the game's price point and some of the tough choices that needed to be made.

Blow explains if the game maintained sales among a niche audience at 800 points he would be "bankrupt or in debt." Then again, if Braid sells moderately well -- and if the buzz over the title keeps going, it should -- he says he could have stuck it out at 800 points and then the game would have probably sold even better. Check out the developer's dilemma in the video after the break.

Realtime Worlds speaks up on Crackdown sequel

Many 360 owners would really love a sequel to the superpower-infused crime fighting favorite, Crackdown. From the sound of things, developer Realtime Worlds would really love to return to the game's open-world universe – and is actually mighty upset that it didn't immediately upon finishing the original.

VG247 spoke to Realtime Worlds studio head Colin Macdonald at the recent UK Develop event, where he said that not starting work on Crackdown 2 straight away "Was a horrible, horrible decision that we still dwell on." Why not just do it, then? Macdonald explained that it was all about sales. "The numbers just didn't add up," he admitted. "We're not in the business of doing things because we'd like to, if we can't guarantee that it makes sense for the company." Instead it moved on to something new, and RTW has been happily cranking away on its crime-themed MMO, GTA Online APB, since.

Still, Macdonald related that the dev could revisit Crackdown once APB wraps. "I don't think the door's closed," he revealed, adding, "Hopefully in the future we'll have the resource and something can be worked out with Microsoft." The house Bill Gates built might have already worked something out, though – with another developer.

Master Chief crash lands into Fable 2

If you noticed in the details to Fable 2's Collector's Edition, there was an "Otherworldly Bonus" for in-game content. Packaged with the announcement were screenshots, including one conspicuously labeled "Fable2_MasterChief.jpg." Yep, that's not just a coincidence, you're looking at a faux-medieval variant of the Halo superstar. (Halo 3 ending spoiler alert) I guess we know what universe he crash-landed in.

And here we thought Minstrel Chief was the only Halo reference we'd find. Fable 2 is coming October 21 for US and October 24 for Europe.

Microsoft's Gosen warns of 'thin line between gimmick and great gameplay'

Look, it's not that Microsoft's Xbox VP, David Gosen, dislikes the Wii and its parade of people-friendly peripherals. "What Nintendo have done with the Wii is truly fantastic – there is no question about it." No question at all -- but there is a but. "But I think sometimes there is a thin line between gimmick and great gameplay." And there's no question that said but refers to that thing that lets you play games with your butt.

Speaking at a Gamefest UK keynote and later to the folks at Develop, Gosen admitted that while different interfaces, whether they be video cameras or plastic guitars, are important in bringing new players into the market, they need to serve a "truly game changing experience." Gosen went on to cite research which found Wii Fit players abandoned their "digital bathroom scales" quite quickly. "They are not good if they are gimmicks. There is a challenge for us to make sure that all new user interfaces are deep and are rewarding to the end user."

And how do you do that, exactly? Gosen offers, "So we have to get the balance right, because what we are doing is bringing new consumers into the market for the first time in their lives sometimes – and we have to treat them with respect." Get the balance of game design right, huh? Sounds like the perfect Wii Fit game, no?

Soul Calibur IV burns two million souls worldwide

Namco Bandai's ridiculously cross-branded Soul Calibur IV has cut a deep swath into retail shelves worldwide, shipping not one million units but two since its July 29 debut.

Still, and not to make an example out of you, Namco, but really all of this chest puffery over units shipped is a bit overblown. It's like bragging about how many pencils you threw at the ceiling, rather than what's really important, namely how many stuck. Then again, we imagine it's difficult to look up and count while you're ducking under the desk from falling profits.
