Mach Rider, Yoshi and Air "Zonk" appear on Virtual Console
In a bitterly tough release week like this one, we hoped to be able to count on the Virtual Console for some classics. However, it looks like we'll be settling for "decent." We're sorry, VC, we don't mean to put so much pressure on you, we know it's not your fault.
- Mach Rider (NES, 1 player, 500 Wii Points): If you don't remember this one, think of it as a combination of Road Blasters and Hang-On, with a color palette that appears to have been selected at random, possibly with the use of darts.
- Yoshi (NES, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points): It's a shame that Yoshi doesn't have a lot to do in his own eponymous game. Most of the time, he sits on the sidelines, watching a fat Italian guy switching plates of mushrooms and egg shells. While that's admittedly a pretty interesting way to spend an afternoon, it still feels like kind of a ripoff.
- Air "Zonk" (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, 600 Wii Points): If Bonk was a complete tool and had a lightning bolt on his forehead, he would be Zonk. If Bonk's Adventure was a pretty decent shoot 'em up, it would be Air "Zonk." Side bonus, Air "Zonk" offers one of the rare opportunities to be part of something called "Team Cool," which seems to be about the best thing you can do. If you're still on the fence, know that Nintendo says that "Air 'Zonk' is filled with humor, made evident by the wacky theme song that plays when you post a huge score or when your game is over." Sold!

There was a Yoshi game on the NES?!
*Boggles mind*
Charron @ Jul 9th 2007 10:47AM
Hell yea there was a Yoshi game, I still have the cartridge! And it might still work, but my NES has all but bit the dust. I used to be pretty good about getting 6-7 characters per egg back in the day. Ahh, memories.
Probably not gonna buy it on the VC.
Anam @ Jul 9th 2007 12:54PM
Yay! Someone gave me half a heart. Still not enough to be able to shoot the sword, but I'm getting there.
JodyAnthony @ Jul 9th 2007 10:36AM
was mach rider the one with the track editor? if so I'll download it.
h8rain @ Jul 9th 2007 10:39AM
I loved Yoshi. It was a great puzzle game (one of the few puzzle games that does not rely completely on colors(me=color blind)). It was kinda sad that the game would be basically the same without Yoshi.

I have this theory that the only genre of games for TurboGrafx16 is schmups. It is seriously insane how many of those fucking things there are on that system!
Big Ed @ Jul 9th 2007 10:42AM
I think that Yoshi game was on the Game Boy as well. Good times.
tactics @ Jul 9th 2007 10:42AM
mach rider was trippy.
-"superfan" tactics.

Bummer, I was hoping for BoF2 or some of the other stellar releases Japan has already.
When is SMB3 coming?
JodyAnthony @ Jul 9th 2007 10:54AM
When BoF 2 comes I will not be turning off my wii for quite a while. It's my favorite in the Breath of Fire series.
hvnlysoldr @ Jul 9th 2007 11:00AM
Should I buy Bonk 1 or 2? I'm interested in it since I didn't have TG-16.
JodyAnthony @ Jul 9th 2007 11:03AM
get them both! they are great.
but if you want to only get one of them I would go with 2.
Jaclo @ Jul 9th 2007 11:13AM
I just wish that they would release more N64 games. I still can't figure out why they released F-Zero X. You would make a much better decision in buying F-Zero GX. Point is....they need to release more N64 titles. Preferably some 3rd party N64 titles as well.
Jack @ Jul 9th 2007 11:50AM
X > GX, I'm afraid. X isn't as blindingly difficult and it has a better soundtrack. Plus, the random track creator is more than enough fun on its own, especially when it flings the 29 AI characters off the track.

Why are some peoples avatars small?
JodyAnthony @ Jul 9th 2007 11:22AM
MAGIC!
also when you reply to someones specific post.
TonyBlair @ Jul 9th 2007 11:23AM
Man, slow week indeed.
Vidikron @ Jul 9th 2007 1:26PM
Won't be for long. Everyone's holding back for E3. Should be quite lively from the middle of the week onward.
sheppy @ Jul 9th 2007 11:25AM
If we're talking N64 games that NEED to happen...
Blast Corps
PERIOD!
IslandLife @ Jul 9th 2007 11:32AM
Wow Mach Rider! I almost forgot about that game, and for good reason. It stunk!
Jack @ Jul 9th 2007 11:52AM
Zonk is a solid shooter and probably the best bang for your buck this week. It's a side-scroller too, if you're sick of all the other (more) generic vertical space shooters.
Shawn Handyside @ Jul 9th 2007 1:04PM
Oh man, I am SO buying Air Zonk. That game was crazy.
Spongie @ Jul 9th 2007 1:02PM
Wow let me hold back my excitement Zzzzzz....

LOL... I just realized you were commenting specifically on releases. I was thinking about general news items.
Anway, that shouldn't last much longer either. Starting in August we should start seeing big titles hit on a regular basis right on through to the start of next year. There is a silly amount of big titles coming this fall/winter.

"If you don't remember this one, think of it as a combination of Road Blasters and Hang-On"
...and if I don't remember Road Blasters or Hang-On...?
Pastor of Muppets @ Jul 9th 2007 2:31PM
Mach Rider was horrible. It was so bad I wrote a letter to the Nintendo Fun Club (which was actually printed!) asking them to start some kind of "rating" system for games. I mentioned Mach Rider by name as the reason I was writing, but they left it out of the newsletter : (
Mr Khan @ Jul 9th 2007 3:12PM
@ Jack
I feel that X is harder than GX, the physics are wonkier and it seems more necessary to just jam on the Boost button to win a match, in novice mode, than it did in GX's Standard difficulty
Dr. Klaw @ Jul 9th 2007 3:20PM
Air Zonk is faaaaantastic. Can't wait to get home to play it!
Thlayli @ Jul 10th 2007 8:32AM
My favorite part of Zonk is the dog sidekick who goes "BARK! BARK! BARK! BARK! BARK!" as an attack.
